At just nine years old, Zara Skepev has raised more than $30,000 to support brain cancer research. This remarkable primary school student has been making and selling earrings, with the funds directed to support female researchers at The John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR).

Last Friday (7 June), Zara and her family ceremoniously handed over cheques worth over $30,000 to Professor Leone Quinn at a colorful event held in the JCSMR Foyer. This year's funds will be allocated to support upcoming star researcher, Dr Nan-Hee Kim, who has recently become a mother. The event was attended by the Dean of ANU College of Science and Medicine, Professor Russell Gruen, and JCSMR Director, Professor Elizabeth Gardiner.

Zara's philanthropic journey began last year when she and her classmate Mila Costa raised $13,980.58 from handmade earring sales. This year, Zara, along with her friend Indie Gocevski, raised $16,553, bringing her total earring sales to $30,553.58 so far. Additionally, Zara's parents Nick and Milena made another $13,500 donation this year, raising the total to $30,000.

The idea for the Zara Skepev Fund for Women in Brain Cancer Research originated when Zara’s mother Milena, founder of the Australian Brain Cancer Foundation, met Professor Leonie Quinn from the John Curtin School of Medical Research at ANU. At the event, Milena pledged to continue the donations and maintain $30,000 per annum towards Zara's fund over five years (2025-2029).

Zara's dedication and entrepreneurial spirit serve as an inspiration to many, demonstrating how even the youngest members of our community can make a significant impact on important causes.

Some highlights of the event.
