JCSMR Student Conference 2023

About

The JCSMR Student Conference is be a great opportunity for students to share their research with each other and to attend panels and discussions about being a research student and future careers.

The Conference for 2023 will be held on 28-29 June at the Marie Reay Teaching Center at ANU.

All students—undergraduate, Honours, Masters, PhD, 6-months post-PhD—are encouraged to attend.

Aside from oral and poster presentations, the Conference will also include a plenary lecture by a leading scientist, mentoring and career advice from experts in industry, policy, consulting and sales, networking coaching, and, practicing with other students, mindfulness and meditation.

Presentations

Oral presentations: 

  • Long talks: 12 min talk + 3 min questions
  • Short talks: 7 min talk + 3 min questions
  • Please make sure you stick to time as you will be penalised if you go over.
  • Please bring your slides on a USB to Level 6 of the Marie Reay Teaching Centre and upload them to the computer from 9:00-9:30 am the morning of your talk. 
  • Please find the marking rubric attached.
  • Please refer to the programme attached for the date and time of your talk. 

Poster presentations: 

  • Please print your posters as A0 on any material (satin is cheapest through ANU printing, located across the road from JCSMR). 
  • Please set up your poster from 9:00-9:30 am in Room 2.02 of the Marie Reay Teaching Centre (Velcro will be provided).
  • You will be required to stand next to your poster during the session to answer question. The markers will go around to each poster individually, where you will be able to explain your poster to them.

Abstract submission

Abstracts* should be submitted by filling in this Google Form. If you want to attend the conference but you do not want to present, please REGISTER for the conference using the same Google Form! Abstract submissions will close on Friday 7 April. 

*NOTE: You do not need to have significant amounts of data to submit an abstract. You can simply submit your project proposal and present a poster on what you have done so far. Your presentation can also include more data than what you include in abstract.

Prizes

The prizes on offer are below. All students attending the Poster Session (June 28, 3:30-5:00 pm) and the Closing Event (June 29, 3:30-5:00 pm) will be given a raffle ticket at the door and will go into the running to win one of 2x $100 Lucky Door Prizes, which will be drawn out of a hat at the end!

  • Best Oral Presentation: $600 Canberra Centre gift voucher + science lab Lego set
  • Student's Choice Best Oral Presentation: $500 Canberra Centre gift voucher + $100 e-card 
  • Best Poster: $200 Canberra Centre gift voucher 
  • Student's Choice Best Poster: $200 Canberra Centre gift voucher 
  • Lucky Door Prize (at Poster session): $100 e-card 
  • Lucky Door Prize (at Closing Event): $100 e-card
     

Catering

Poster session: cheese platters + non-alcoholic drinks (Room 2.02, Marie Reay Teaching Centre)
Closing event: canapés + alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks (Drill Hall Gallery)
