JCSMR Research Day 2024: Advancing the frontiers of medical research
The John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR) hosted its annual Research Day on Thursday 14 November, at the Finkel Lecture Theatre. With enthusiastic participation from students, researchers, and academics, this year’s event celebrated the theme "Taking Our Research to the Next Level.”
Aligned with JCSMR’s 75th anniversary celebrations, the day began with an inspiring address by Professor Elizabeth Gardiner, Director of JCSMR, who shared her vision for the School’s future. This was followed by presentations from the heads of the School’s three divisions, outlining their strategic directions.
The symposium featured 14 speakers, representing all divisions, who showcased their ongoing projects, key achievements, challenges, and future goals. Each session concluded with engaging Q&A and discussion rounds, fostering collaboration and idea exchange.
A highlight of the day was a keynote lecture by Professor Anne Voss from the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute, titled “Two Paths from Fundamental Research towards Clinical Translation.” Her presentation offered valuable insights into the journey from discovery research to real-world applications.
Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, a Trade Show was held in the Foyer, spotlighting the work of JCSMR’s Facilities teams.
This year’s Research Day was led by academic chair Professor David Tremethick, with the organising committee comprising representatives from the Division of Genome Sciences & Cancer, Division of Neuroscience, Division of Immunology & Infectious Diseases, School Admin and Facilities, under the coordination of Dr Emmalene Bartlett.
The event exemplified JCSMR’s commitment to innovation and collaboration, paving the way for future advancements in medical research.
