In JCSMR 75th Anniversary Alumni Spotlight Series, we celebrate the remarkable journeys of our alumni who continue to inspire and innovate across diverse fields. In this edition, we feature Dr Chloe Lim, a scientist turned entrepreneur whose unique career spans cutting-edge biomedical research, science education, and even professional balloon artistry. From unravelling the mysteries of gene expression at JCSMR to becoming a TEDx speaker and founder of Twistyfic, Dr Lim's story is one of resilience, creativity, and passion for STEM engagement.

Dr Lim's journey began at the John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR) during her summer research projects as an undergraduate from New Zealand. Captivated by molecular biology, she pursued her Honours and PhD at JCSMR, exploring how chromatin regulates gene expression in T cells—a project that combined emerging bioinformatics techniques with groundbreaking molecular research.

As an international student from Malaysia, Dr Lim navigated financial and personal challenges with determination. She recalls the bittersweet experience of missing her grandmother’s funeral while completing her PhD, highlighting the sacrifices often faced by international scholars. Yet, these struggles became a source of strength, shaping her resilience and drive to succeed.

Her dedication paid off, with achievements including winning the Best Student Poster Award at the 2007 Epigenetics Conference and securing publications that showcased her innovative work.

After completing her PhD and a postdoc, Dr Lim’s career journey took a creative turn. Leaving academia, she transitioned into regulatory science with the Therapeutic Goods Administration, where she now leads a team of evaluators. However, her passion for STEM outreach and creativity found a new avenue: balloon artistry.

In 2019, she founded Giggly Wiggly Balloons, a business that combines art and science to inspire curiosity in children. Her talent as a balloon artist earned her national recognition as a finalist on Channel 7’s Blow Up in 2023.

Dr Lim’s innovative spirit led her to establish Twistyfic, a company that merges balloon artistry with science education. Through storytelling and interactive shows, she introduces children to concepts like genetics, making science engaging and fun. Her book, What Makes You Unique, exemplifies her dedication to making STEM accessible to young learners.

Beyond her entrepreneurial ventures, Dr Lim is a staunch advocate for diversity in STEM. As a coach and mentor for organisations like STEM Sisters and Global Sisters, she uplifts culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) women. Her podcast, CALD Voices in STEM, amplifies the stories of CALD women, while her recent TEDxCanberra talk encourages others to unlock their hidden talents.

Dr Lim’s achievements have earned her accolades such as the 2023 Canberra Women in Business Micro Businesswoman of the Year Award and recognition in the Asian/Asian Australian (AA124) List. Her innovative blend of science, art, and advocacy leaves an indelible mark on both the scientific and creative communities.

In her words, “Believe in your work and be ready to change direction depending on the results. If something isn’t working, try something different. Be open to opportunities and trust in your resourcefulness” says Dr Lim.
