The Australian National University (ANU) is looking for the best PhD candidates in the world to join us at one of the best universities in the world.

You will study alongside leading scientists at Australia’s national medical research institute, The John Curtin School of Medical Research (JCSMR), as they work on ground-breaking research which could change lives – and will certainly change yours.

During your PhD at JCSMR you may help to develop a vaccine for malaria or HIV, or make a discovery about the brain that leads to new treatments for neurological diseases like epilepsy.  Or perhaps you will make a fundamental finding about RNA that sheds light on genetic disorders, or be part of a team that discovers a completely new way to treat cancer.

This is an opportunity for outstanding domestic and international students with a Bachelor degree with First Class Honours (or equivalent) to start their career in medical research at a university ranked best in the country and 19^th in the world (QS World University Rankings).

JCSMR is one of the most prestigious medical research institutes in Australia.  Two Nobel Prizes have been won here, and our faculty have received many other awards.  You will be working with the best and brightest!

JCSMR is housed in a spectacular new building with state-of-the-art laboratories and facilities, including high-throughput sequencing, electron and multiphoton microscopy, FACS, transgenic animal breeding and supercomputer resources.

As an ANU PhD student, you will be able to attend many professional development and training programs that are offered by the university, including courses on statistics, professional writing and public speaking.  You will also be given the opportunity to choose a personal mentor from among our faculty.  Your mentor will smooth your path through your PhD, as well as offer practical advice on how to build a satisfying career after you graduate.

Successful candidates will receive a three-year living allowance to complete their PhD with us in Canberra, named the world’s most liveable city in the OECD Better Life Index.  Your stipend will be at least $26,288 per annum, tax free.

In addition, successful international candidates will have their tuition fees waived for the three years of their PhD.

Scholarships are available across all of our research departments, incorporating neuroscience, genomics, immunology and cancer.
