Dr Wilfred Armarego appointed Member of the Order of Australia
The John Curtin School of Medical Research is delighted to congratulate Dr Wilfred L. F. Armarego for being appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in recognition of his significant service to biochemistry and molecular biology at ANU.
Dr Armarego started working at JCSMR in 1960, first in the Department of Medical Chemistry and then in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Among his contributions to science, he co-authored Purification of Laboratory Chemicals, published in 1966, which as of 2017 is in its 8th edition. Dr Armarego is an Honorary Member of the Australian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute, and is a Chartered Chemist.
Dr Armarego said he was surprised at the honour and very grateful.
“I want to thank the JCSMR for the opportunity and freedom to carry out research for 36 years. For 28 of those years I worked on the biochemistry and molecular biology of enzymes and their cofactors which are defective in children with inborn errors of metabolism”.
The award, he said, felt even more special as the nomination process was started by his own daughter.
