ANU Professors Graham Farquhar and Christopher Goodnow were formally inducted into the US National Academy of Sciences on April 26th this year. The formal proceedings were webcast around the world.

Here they are pictured on the lawns of the US Academy, across the road from the Abraham Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. Lincoln established the US Academy of Sciences to ensure the US caught up with Europe and England in science and technology, at the same time as fighting a civil war over the question of slavery so that "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from this earth".
