    • Referees should have recent knowledge of the candidate, and be able to comment on the applicant’s academic, and preferably, research ability.
    • Referees should be senior academics rather than co-workers.

Supervisors Recommendation

An applicant can only be successful for admission if the ANU can provide appropriate supervision. It assists your application if you have already discussed supervision with an ANU academic before applying. If this is the case they will be asked to provide a letter of recommendation. Closing Dates

The closing date for students wishing to apply for scholarships as an international student is 31st August in any year. For a second semester commencement the closing date is 31st May. However, it should be noted that there will be very few if any scholarships for international students at the 31st May deadline.

The closing date for Australian and New Zealand citizens, or Australian (but not New Zealand) permanent residents is the 31st October in any year. For a second semester commencement the closing date is 31st May.

However, all students are advised to contact the Medical Sciences Graduate Convenor (medical.gradprog@anu.edu.au) as soon as they have made a decision to apply: There are several externally funded scholarships with different closing dates.

Successful applicants are expected to commence their program of study no later than 31st March (31st August for 2nd semester) in the year their scholarship commences.

Scholarship Eligibility

Applicants must not already hold a degree at the level for which they are applying for a scholarship. Applicants who hold or who have held, an equivalent award, may be ineligible.

Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA)

The Australian Federal Government provides the funding. APA are open to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents. APA holders are paid a fortnightly stipend that is indexed annually.  Additional benefits include paid annual leave, sick leave and maternity/paternity leave entitlements, relocation and thesis allowance.  Full-time APA scholarships are tax-exempt. Only under exceptional circumstances are APAs able to be held Part-Time. At present the CMHS policy is that these scholarships will only be offered to PhD candidates (not MPhil).

University Research Scholarships

The ANU provides the funding.  The awards are open to Australian and overseas applicants. Holders are paid a fortnightly stipend that is indexed annually.  Additional benefits include paid annual leave, sick leave and maternity/paternity leave entitlements, relocation and thesis allowance.  Full-time scholarships are tax-exempt.

Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (EIPRS)

These are provided by DEST to assist outstanding scholars from overseas. IPRS are open to overseas students only (excluding New Zealand citizens).  IPRS covers the cost of tuition fees and Overseas Student Health Cover only and does not pay a living allowance.

ANU PhD or MPhil Scholarships

The local area provides the funding.

Externally Funded Scholarships

These are available for some research programs.  Eligible applicants will be advised of these scholarships when available.  Conditions are generally similar to those discussed below, however each scholarship may be tailored to suit the particular requirements of the funding agency.

Length of Scholarships

The maximum period of tenure of APA, EIPRS and ANU scholarships is three (3) years and one (1) year for Masters by Research degree candidates. Extension for 6 months beyond these limits may be granted under conditions of adequate progress
