The Responsibilities of The Chair of the Panel/Major Supervisor


  1. Knowledge of the rules and regulations

  3. Early in the candidature;
    1. Advising on any supplementary training (eg English-as-a-second-language).
    2. Making sure both the remaining members of the Panel and the candidate understand the supervisory arrangements, their own responsibilities and the scope and facets of the project.
    3. Arrangement of regular contact with the student, which should be expected and maintained by both.
    4. Provision of all necessary resources (ie space, ERM, animals etc., computing, fieldwork etc.) for the completion of the thesis.
    5. Provision of all necessary instruction for the safe and ethical progress of the project.
    6. Advising on requirements for the retention of primary data, on Intellectual Property and the restrictions if research is funded by a contractual arrangement.
    7. Setting up the candidate’s Panel and upon notification from the School Secretary’s office, calling a meeting for the 3-month review.
    8. Submitting the report of the Panel discussion after the 3-month meeting with all Panel members’ and the student’s signatures.

  4. During the remaining candidature;
    1. Discussion and agreement on publication arising from a thesis.
    2. Advice on contacts with other researchers.
    3. Notification after discussion of any substantial changes in candidature (eg changes in supervision).
    4. After notification from the School Secretary’s office, organising the First Year Review.
    5. Submitting the required report on the results of the review.
    6. Encouraging participation in the intellectual activity of the School eg by attendance and presentations at seminars, workshops and conferences.
    7. Conference support and encouragement, including reviewing written or oral work.
    8. Reviewing written work during the course of the project and before submission of thesis.
    9. Advising the candidate, throughout the candidature, on prizes and awards, post-doctoral or visiting fellow appointments, and other career options.
    10. Discussion and agreement on appointment of examiners and on the examiners requirements during the revision process.
