After two decades of intense research in HIV vaccine development there is still no robust viable vaccine candidate. However, the development of an HIV vaccine must remain at the forefront of our research agenda with the belief that the scientific obstacles can be overcome. Our Group has made several advances in the development of an AIDS vaccine, including prime-boost immunisation and cytokine co expression. Some of these approaches have reached clinical trial. Although these vaccine approaches are effective in animal models these results have not translated to the clinic. Further approaches that elicit even more effective protective immune responses are required. Our Group is studying novel approaches to elicit high levels of robust cell-mediated immunity at the mucosae in the hope that this will protect against HIV infection.
