Arno Müllbacher (1946-) studied chemical engineering in Vienna,
Austria, and in 1967 emigrated to Australia. After working as an analytical
chemist for two years he moved to New Zealand, where he enrolled at the University
of Auckland and graduated BSc in 1973 and MSc (Cell Biology) in 1975. He then
enrolled for a PhD in the Department of Microbiology in the John Curtin School,
working with Robert Blanden on cell-mediated immunity. After graduating in 1979
he joined Peter Medawar’s laboratory at the Clinical Research Centre in
Harrow, where he worked on problems related to the so-called 'Immune Response
gene defects'. In 1981 he returned to The John Curtin School as a Research Fellow
in the Department of Microbiology and moved up the ladder to become Senior Fellow
in 1989 and Professor in 2002 His main research interest is in the role cytolytic
lymphocytes play in the recovery from viral infections ,the mechanisms involved
in this process and memory of cytolytic T cell responses.
