Biosketch:

Eva Lee, born in Taiwan and educated in Taiwan and Singapore in her early years, graduated from the Australian National University with a Bachelor of Science degree and first class honours in Biochemistry in 1987; she subsequently undertook research in molecular virology under the supervision of Dr Lynn Dalgarno and Dr Ron Weir at the Division of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Australian National University and was awarded a PhD degree in 1991. She has a longstanding research interest in molecular biology of arthropod-transmitted viruses including flaviviruses (eg. dengue, Japanese encephalitis, yellow fever viruses) and alphaviruses (eg. Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses) with emphasis on molecular characterization of viral genomes and proteins, key features of the virus life-cycle, and virus-host interaction using the mouse model or in vitro tissue cultures. Her current research projects include the role of proteolytic processing in assembly of flaviviruses, and role of virus attachment to heparan sulphate proteoglycans in uptake of Japanese encephalitis, West Nile, dengue and yellow fever viruses into host cells and in virulence attenuation.
