The laboratory pursues two broad research objectives:

• to enhance our understanding of the fundamental properties of immune responses at the molecular, cellular, and system level, with a particular emphasis on immune responses against viruses;
• to study virus / host interactions at the molecular and cellular level, and through this develop strategies for the prevention or therapy of viral disease.

Molecular Virology Laboratory

The laboratory investigates the biology, pathogenesis, and immunity against flaviviruses, which are responsible for the most important insect-transmitted viral diseases in humans, such as dengue, yellow fever, and viral encephalitis. Our particular emphasis is on studies on flavivirus replication using recombinant DNA approaches, flavivirus virulence and pathogenesis using mouse models of flaviviral disease, and vaccination and therapeutic compounds against flaviviral disease.
