JCSMR Special School Seminar: India’s effort at building excellence in life science

Dr MK Bhan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India.

Dr MK Bhan has served as the Secretary of India’s Department of Biotechnology since 2004, spanning a period of remarkable growth and dynamism in India’s biotechnology sector.

In this capacity, he has guided the Government of India’s growing expenditure on research and research infrastructure and overseen significant policy reforms such as strengthening support for international collaboration, bolstering India’s research workforce and supporting greater linkages between publicly-funded researchers and industry.  In addition to its policy work and program delivery, the Department of Biotechnology oversees the operations of thirteen research institutes and two publicly-owned biotechnology companies.

Dr Bhan is a well-regarded researcher in his own right, specialising in paediatric gastroenterology, paediatric infectious diseases and nutrition, for which he has received numerous Indian and international awards.

Dr Bhan is a co-chair of the Indo-Australian Biotechnology Fund, a component of the Australia-India Strategic Research Fund, Australia’s largest bilateral fund for science with any country and one of India’s largest sources of support for international science.
