The primary olfactory cortex or the piriform cortex is important for the processing of olfactory sensory information and the formation of “odour images” (for example, the olfactory percept of a rose). Two types of glutamatergic principal neurons abound in layer 2 of the piriform cortex: the semilunar (SL) cells and the superficial pyramidal (SP) cells. We have previously shown that SL and SP cells occupy different laminar positions in layer 2 and differ from each other in both connectivity and electrophysiology. Using in vivo patch clamping, we now show that SL and SP cells of the piriform cortex respond differently to odour presentation in vivo, suggesting that they serve distinct roles in the processing of olfactory sensory information.
