Computational & Conceptual Biology
We aim to understand how proteins carry out their functions in the cell and how they have been sculpted by evolution to do so. Our findings provide the basic knowledge to understand proteins’ normal functions in plants and animals, and their dysfunctions in disease.
The free availability of huge amounts of biological information in international databanks – especially nucleotide and protein sequences and structures and gene expression data from all kingdoms of life – provide new means for asking and answering scientific questions. The conceptual biology approach aims to create hypotheses and test them using existing data and literature. We re-purpose data generated by other researchers, and create novel links (“maps”) between data of different types. We then interrogate the combined data matrix to find new insights into protein structure and function that we develop into predictions for further test by experiment and computation.
